MY NEW YORK MAP

My map shows places, such as restaurants and copy centers, near the Hotel Wolcott. I developed this map to help you plan your stay in New York.

B & B NEW YORK MAP

I would strongly recommend purchasing the B & B City Streets: New York City: City Center Map (Berndtson & Berndtson are the authors). This map can be found at Barnes & Nobles (Birmingham; near the Hoover Galleria). I have been stranded too many times in foreign cities by inadequate maps. This series of maps simply does it right - no improvements needed. The B & B Map is laminated and can easily be folded many different ways. It shows every street, no matter how small. It lists bus lines, subway lines, and even buildings, such as the Met Life building and the Mid-Manhattan Library.

Another cool feature of the map is that major areas of Manhattan receive their own little section. There are zoomed-in maps of Midtown and the Financial District with amazing detail. Best of all, it only costs $6.95. If you are interviewing in other major U.S. cities or even international cities, I would suggest that you look for maps by B & B City Streets or of comparable quality.

GOUSHA: FASTMAP: NEW YORK CITY SUBWAYS

The Gousha Map can also be purchased at Barnes & Nobles. The subway lines are depicted for all the boroughs of New York. This puts the Gousha Map at an advantage to the B & B Map when it comes to subways.  The B & B Map does have a general subway map on the back, though. However, the B & B Map and the FREE subway and bus maps distributed by the MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) make for a better combination than one with the Gousha Map.  Besides, I found that you will very quickly learn the subway lines and stops, needing to only occasionally reference the map.

FREE MTA SUBWAY AND BUS MAPS

PLASTIC WALLET MAPS

Plastic wallet maps are available from Anton Miles Co. for major cities like New York, San Francisco, and Atlanta. They are neat oddities with some value as a memory refresher.

USING THE MAPS FOR PREPARATION

While at home, locate each building you will need in NYC by using Mapquest and the street address guide. Then put small sticky dots or strips, such as those cut from Avery-brand disk or address labels, on the map to indicate the location of the building. Write numbers on each of the sticky dots to use with a legend.

Make a legend sheet with the label numbers of the corresponding firms or places such as a particular store (Kinko's, Staples, etc.). Finally, put a dot of color on the map labels to make them visible to your eye since you want the labels to be small enough to keep from covering up street names. If you have trouble seeing the sticky dots then run your hand over the map and you can easily feel their edges.

After a few uses, you will quickly learn where certain buildings are without constantly cross-referencing the numbers to the legend sheet.
