The Street Address Guide

This guide is useful as a hard copy and for carrying around with you, in case you need to locate a building on-the-go. It is easier and more accurate, however, to use Mapquest to locate buildings before you go to New York.

Most of the time when people give you an address, they will tell you the cross street or cross avenue. This is especially true for addresses in the southern part of Manhattan, which consists of named rather than numbered streets. You should always ask for a cross street or avenue if the person does not provide one.

Manhattan is divided into East-West streets by Fifth Avenue for the area roughly above 14th street.

To locate avenue addresses cancel the last digit, divide by 2, and add or subtract according to the following table. This will give you the approximate cross street.

Cancel the last figure and add 60.

FROM THE NUMBER AND STREET

Avenues for cross-town street addresses are easier to deduce. In midtown, from 14th Street to 59th Street, the street numbers begin east and west of Fifth Avenue. Street addresses west of Fifth Avenue are spaced 100 numbers apart between avenues. Street addresses east of Fifth Avenue are divided by 50 numbers between avenues, until Third Avenue when the addresses are separated by 100.
